The scratchboard is a study of a Sumatran tiger, based on several reference photos taken at Auckland Zoo. Sumatran (Indonesian) tigers are the smallest of all the tiger species in the world. They actually have webbed feet, that helps them swim great distances to catch their prey. Sadly, their species is critically endangered. Their numbers are dwindling due to loss of habitat and poaching. Today it is estimated there are only 350-400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild. This in itself shows how important the breeding programmes in these Zoos are to ensure the survival of their species, and how lucky our generation are to get to see them.
